Voices From Students

To find out about how students think about the project, we did a survey amongst 267 students in early January.
To our surprise, we found out that 72.4% of the people were agreeable to the Rebate2Earth despite our fears of major student outcry. It shows that the awareness level to protect the environment has increased.
Here are some of the feedbacks we hear from the students:

THE YES ANSWERS:
  • "Yes. As people are too lazy to give up plastic bags this is a pretty good way to force people in to thinking that reusable bags are a much better option. This is for our own good and as University students we should start being an example in the society to promote environmental protection."
  • "We already use too much plastic. If the carrot does not work, we need to use the stick to reduce the use of plastic bag and raise the awareness of environmental concern issue."
  • "Yes, agreeable, because plastic bags are not a necessity but we consume it in large quantities. Only with a charge of more than 10 cents (which is nothing to most people) will they stop using it excessively. "
  • "Just look at how students are buying the food from canteen and wasting the bags. For instance, if a group of 3 students buy food and they carry with their hands, they save 3 bags. If they really need the bag, they could put their food together and save on 2. Its small actions like these that will start to make a difference."
  • "Plastic bags are not always absolutely necessary, and using too many is bad for the environment, so if there's a chance to do something to help the environment, why not?"
  • "YES, can put things i purchase into my bag without looking weird."

The No Answers:
  • "No,1st,Every day we have to bring textbook and notes to school, it's very heavy already, it will be very inconvenient to bring a reusable to school every day; 2nd, we are students, we do not have income, so it is not suitable to increase the tax inside the school."
  • "No. A policy should be a nationwide implementation instead of within NUS, which is may be unfair to the staffs and students in NUS."
  • "I doubt the efficiency of such reusable bags. I don't think students will bring a big reusable bag to school if they are to go somewhere to pack food for themselves or even friends. Due to the size of such bags, it can be bulky too."
  • "I'll kill you if it gets implemented!"
